I did a College Board search for you based on your stats and came up with this list of Midwestern colleges, all of which accept half or more of their students with stats like yours. Please keep in mind that this means that, at some of these colleges, you'd be considered an outstanding applicant (so they're safety schools), while at others, like Indiana University or the University of Wisconsin-Madison, you'd be considered acceptable but not a priority (so they're reach schools). The vast majority, however, are "match" schools for you. You can visit the college profiles at CollegeBoard.com to see exactly where you match up for them. Of course, please remember that some state universities expect higher GPAs from out-of-state applicants, and don't forget all of the other factors involved. :) But hopefully, if your whole application will be as strong as you expect, all of these would be within reach. Question: Getting a major in the language you already speak?
I want to major in a language that I already speak (which is not English). However, I'm a citizen of that country, and lived there until I came to the US when I was around 10. I speak that language pretty fluently, as well as English. However, I want to be a translator of that language and English. I thought it would be better if I had a major in the language that I speak, even though I speak it already, because I thought it would look better when I'm getting the job, to let the employer know that I really know my language. However, is it really worth it to major in the language you already speak? I thought it would be, because Americans major in English. But people disagree that it's a waste of time if I major in the language I already speak. Should I maybe double major in my language and English? Or should I major in English, then minor in the other? Would it be better if I not major/minor in my language at all since I can write, read, etc? Please give me your thoughts!

First, congratulations on choosing a very important and rewarding career! Here's what you need to know. There are so many (well-paid!) opportunities out there for translators / interpreters these days, but certification is essential, and it is not easy to achieve. You would think that fluency in two languages would be enough, but it is not. You are absolutely correct in suspecting that a major in your non-English language is going to be most helpful to you in the long run. If you do not attend one of the universities below as an undergraduate, you are going to have to pursue graduate work at one of them after you earn your BA. These are the schools that offer ATA-certified T&I (translation and interpretation) programs that will help you tremendously in preparing for ATA certification. Most of these programs require at least 300-level (third year) courses in the non-English language of your specialization. In addition, any coursework you take in English would be fine (especially things like Business and Administrative Writing), but courses in Linguistics will be even more important. Here is the list of colleges with approved T&! programs. You would be wise to do an internet search on each program's requirements, and even to correspond with the program directors in order to get more specific information. I have also included the ATA website below. There is a TON of information there that you will find to be very helpful. I wish you every success! Question: What is a good American university that offers courses in Paramedics or something relating to it?
The school must have a NCAA approved swim team. I am a Canadian swimmer and I am in my last year of high school. I am not looking for a course that will get me a job in paramedics, I only want a course that is somewhat related to the field. This is because I intend to go to school after university to become a paramedic.

Almost all EMT/paramedic programs in the United States are offered by community colleges or hospitals, not universities. This is because you do not need a degree to become an EMT -- you just need certification training. Based on your search criteria, I've done a search for you and come up with the following: Arkansas Tech University - Russellville, AR Brigham Young University-Idaho - Rexburg, ID Dixie State College of Utah - Saint George, UT Eastern Kentucky University - Richmond, KY Fairmont State University - Fairmont, WV Idaho State University - Pocatello, ID Indiana University Bloomington - Bloomington, IN Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis - Indianapolis, IN Jefferson College of Health Sciences - Roanoke, VA Macon State College - Macon, GA Mesa State College - Grand Junction, CO Montana State University: Billings - Billings, MT Oregon Health & Science University - Portland, OR Shawnee State University - Portsmouth, OH Springfield College - Springfield, MA University of Alabama at Birmingham - Birmingham, AL University of Arkansas at Monticello - Monticello, AR University of Maryland: Baltimore County - Baltimore, MD University of New Mexico - Albuquerque, NM Weber State University - Ogden, UT Western Carolina University - Cullowhee, NC Western Kentucky University - Bowling Green, KY Youngstown State University - Youngstown, OH You'll need to further narrow those down to determine the NCAA level that you'd like. I can tell you off-hand that Indiana University is the most prestigious of the bunch. Go to http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/adv_typeofschool.jsp to do a more specialized search. Keep in mind that swim team positions will be much more competitive at some, particularly those with higher admissions standards. Good luck.
Bonjour!
Question: What are the best colleges for journalism?
I want to be a journalist but I have absolutely no idea what colleges would be good for that. Also, what electives should I take in high school if I want to be a journalist?

What to look for: Do the professors have professional journalism experience? Can students take classes in photojournalism, TV, audio and online media as well as reporting and writing? What opportunities do students have to practice their skills? Does the school operate a TV studio? Is there a daily student newspaper? Ball State University-- Programs in journalism graphics, magazine, news-editorial, photojournalism. Indiana University - Bloomington-- One journalism program, with advanced courses in newspaper, magazine, broadcast news, photojournalism, editing, and news analysis and opinion writing. University of Florida-- Programs in reporting, editing, magazine, online, photojournalism, broadcast news. University of Maryland-- Programs in broadcast, online, and print journalism. University of Missouri-- Programs in convergence journalism, magazine, newspaper, photojournalism, radio-television. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill-- Programs in electronic communication, news-editorial, journalism, visual communication. Classes to take in highschool that might help you get in there would, of course, be as many english classes as possible. Also if you have a specific area of journalism you would like to cover (i.e. Science, theater, etc) takes classes that cover that. Hope that helps and good luck! Jane Marie
