Question: Are there any good radiologic tech programs in phoenix?

I'm looking to go to school to a radiologic tech (not just an x-ray tech). Does anyone know of any good schools or anything that offer a program like this somewhere in phoenix?

You can attend a hospital based program (and earn a certificate), a 2 year college program (AS degree), and even a 4 year college program (BS degree). The hospital based programs are the least expensive, and honestly, I think the education received there is superior. Once you graduate and take your registry exam, no future employer is going to care what type of educational program you went through. All they care about is your license. You can find an accredited RT program at this site. Just search "radiography" and your state...links are provided which will give you additional information on each program (cost, duration of program, contact person): http://www.jrcert.org/cert/Search.jsp The accredited radiologic technology schools in AZ are: Pima Medical Institute-Mesa Mesa AZ 85202 Apollo College-Phoenix/U.S. Education Corporation Phoenix AZ 85017 GateWay Community College Phoenix AZ 85034 Pima County Community College Tucson AZ 85709-0080 Pima Medical Institute-Tucson Tucson AZ 85716 Arizona Western College Yuma AZ 85366-0929 The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (which is the proper term for a x-ray tech) just did a large salary survey. The salary varies, depending on your experience, specialties and geographical area. You can view the survey here: https://www.asrt.org/media/pdf/research/wss2007/wss07annualcompensation.pdf The average yearly income for a RT in AZ was $57,290. With additional licensing (ie: CT, MRI, mammography), you can make more money. RTs do more than just x-rays of bones. We do fluoroscopy studies (involving the intestinal tract and barium), arthrograms (assisting the radiologist with injecting contrast or dye into joints for evaluation) and myelograms (assisting the radiologist with injecting contrast into the spinal canal). If you work in a hospital setting, you will do portable exams in ICU, CCU, the ER and even surgery. Most RTs will also become proficient and licensed in other modalities, such as mammography, CT and/or MRI. The more licenses you have, the more money you can make, as you will be in higher demand. With additional schooling, you can also do ultrasound. I highly recommend you do an observation in both a hospital imaging department and a free standing imaging facility. Until you see what RTs do, you won't know if it is the job for you! It would also give you a wonderful opportunity to talk to RTs in your area. Best wishes..... Oh, another good resource....check out the student area of the ASRT website: https://www.asrt.org/content/educators/_educatorsstudents.aspx

I think you mean x-ray technologist. Not that I care, but some of the techs will flip out about that. I know that some of the colleges (like Apollo) are pretty spendy. Usually the community colleges are cheaper, but tougher to get into. As for the total cost? I've never really figured it out. Depends on how many prereqs they require. I know for my prereqs (w/ books) it was about 5-6K. Then the x-ray program itself is about 1,000-1,200 per quarter (for 8 quarters). Another 1,300K for books. Plus if you have to travel to clinical sites and stay in hotels like I did. I'm guessing it's still getting close to 19K, but I think Apollo College is closer to 30K so there are more expensive places.

To find x-ray schools, go to ARRT.org, then Education/CE, Primary Certification, List of Educational Pgms, Radiography, and Submit. Go down the list until you find the schools in your area. Here are two in Phoenix, but there may be others on the list outside of Phoenix that are close enough to you.
