Depending on what type of ranger you want to be you will need to get a degree in Law enforcement, Natural Resources/Science, Anthropology/Archeology/History, Education, Recreation management, and sometimes social sciences. You will also need to have job experience working out outdoors and with large groups of people. Then you might be in the running for a Seasonal Job. Park rangers are often very competitive positions so If you want a permanent job you better get a Masters degree or a Law enforcement certification or you'll need to find ONE park that will hire you on as a seasonal employee for enough years (Not likely with National Parks because of the application process) that they finally decide to send you do the POST Academy (note this is only for a law enforcement position) if you want a permanent park job in another field especially education based fields like natural resources or Archeology you are probably going to have to get a masters degree no matter how long you have worked as a seasonal ranger. Some good experiences to have on a resume for Park ranger include: Law Enforcement positions -First responder/EMT (volunteer fire dept would fit here as well) -Youth corrections/wilderness therapy programs/half-way house worker -Past officer experience (police, sheriff dept, corrections officer, security guard) -Military experience Rural Park positions: -Ranch and farm work/maintenance -Wilderness experience (outdoor education, wilderness guide) -Residential summer camp experience -Search and rescue/fire crew -Trail/forestry crew -First responder/EMT perhaps with a wilderness upgrade depending on how remote position is. -Some remote parks require all staff to carry firearms for protection and pass a training program. Academic positions (Biologist, Geologist, Archaeologist, Anthropologist, etc…) -Will need a bachelor's degree for seasonal positions for permanent positions expect to need a masters degree -Wilderness experience (trail crew, wilderness guide, research tech) -College or past internship and/or research experience -Do not let your degree be inactive for 3 years or more you will find it very hard to find positions willing to accept them after that amount of time has passed. -Able to identify plant, animal, rocks or other object of study. -Experience in writing published academic reports is a big plus for upper level positions. Recreational and Interpretive Rangers -Degree in recreation programming/management or education. -Experience presenting in front of large groups -Experience preparing presentations (written, spoken) -Versed in animal/plant identification and history in area -Past experience working in the field of recreation or education. All positions -Ability to speak a second language -Knowledge of park, city, county, and state regulations. -Experience handling a radio -Ability to operate boats, ATV, 4-wheel drive vehicle and sometimes horse experience. -Navigation (map, compass, GPS) -Different positions have different fitness requirements On of the best things you could do is go to www.USAJobs.gov (Federal jobs website) and look at the requirements for the park ranger job postings they have. Just so you know GS-04 and GS-05 are usually seasonal jobs and permanent positions are usually starting at GS-07.
